Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the slab building method and how to express a creative theme through the creation of a slab box with a lid and a theme about identity.
Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath. The layer(s) of color can be underglazes or colored slips. Below is an example of one technique and what can be achieved.
All students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the coil building method through planning, sketching, and the creation of a coil pot about 10 inches tall.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the art installation process through sketching, collaboration, and the creation of piece of ceramic coral that will be added to the class installation.
Do Now: Please take out your coral and place it on the middle table in a group. We are going to look at how these pieces are fitting together so far.
