Students will demonstrate an understanding of a subtractive sculpting method through the creation of a ceramic figure with head and shoulders.
Project: Make up a character and draw a picture of this character. What is the characters name? What is this characters personality like? Requirements: Must have some kind of a head and shoulders. Must be close to a life sized human head (does not have to be human) Must show at least three different textures Optional: Have a non ceramic addition, have a character or animal added to the design. Students demonstrate an understanding of how to plan and build a 3d model out of clay showing a chosen theme.
John Brickels Lowell Massachusetts Artist John Brickels has been creating stoneware clay sculptures for over 30 years. His ceramic art ranges from architecturally themed sculptures, machines, life size robots and vintage pedal car bodies retrofitted with ceramic mechanicals. His work is created from slab and extruded stoneware clay. Requirements: Must have a photo of a building you are inspired by to work off of. Must have a theme or story. Must be atlas ten inches in all directions. Options for building: Slab, Coil, wheel thrown parts. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to work with a chosen theme through the creation of a 5 piece set showing unity between pieces.

Participation Points Reminder: You must be working on something ceramic related. Not everyone works at the same speed so if you finish a project early and need an idea of a project to further push your skills, please ask me. This is not a study hall. If you need to be asked to work with clay you will lose your daily participation points. All students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of texture, expressive mark making showing emotion and the symbolism of masks through speaking, acting, writing and the creating of a mask showing texture and emotion.
You must complete all 6 different small sketches and one large one before starting. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the slab building method and how to express a creative theme through the creation of a slab box with a lid and a theme about identity.
Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath. The layer(s) of color can be underglazes or colored slips. Below is an example of one technique and what can be achieved.
All students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the coil building method through planning, sketching, and the creation of a coil pot about 10 inches tall.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the art installation process through sketching, collaboration, and the creation of piece of ceramic coral that will be added to the class installation.
Do Now: Please take out your coral and place it on the middle table in a group. We are going to look at how these pieces are fitting together so far. What difficulties have you been running into with this project? Which coral pieces stand out the most? What are some other things we can add to the installation? How do we want to display the facts for the viewers? |
